The COMESA Court of Justice (CCJ) is participating in the 28th Annual Conference of the East African Law Society, held in Bujumbura, Burundi from November 22 – 25 November 2023 under the theme one region, one people: the role of the law and the legal profession in defining the future of the East African Ccommunity.”

The Court delegation is comprised of Honourable Judges: Dr. Justice Michael Mtambo, Honourable Lady Justice Salohy Randrianarisoa, Lady Justice Clotilde Mukamurera, and three Registry staff.

The Conference presents the opportunity to raise public awareness about the mandate and Jurisdiction of the Court through interactive discussions with conference participants. The CCJ is also disseminating information materials about the Court as well as branded gifts as a strategic outreach initiative designed to enhance public awareness of CCJ among its court users, legal practitioners within Member states, and other stakeholders at the Conference.

During the exhibition, Chief Justice emeritus of the Republic of Kenya, Hon. David Maraga [E.G.H], visited the CCJ exhibition booth. He was received by Hon. Justice Dr. Michael Mtambo and the CCJ staff. The retired Chief Justice acknowledged the remarkable work that CCJ is doing in resolving cross-border trade disputes among member states thus deepening regional integration.

The CCJ booth was also visited by the Chairperson of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission(EACC) of the Republic of Kenya, Bishop Dr. David Oginde. He noted the need for strategic tripartite co-operation between State Agencies, the legal professions within COMESA member states, and COMESA institutions in order to tackle issues of corruption and money laundering in cross-border trade which pose significant challenges to regional integration.

Both, the retired Chief Justice and the EACC Chairperson were part of a panel of speakers during the 28th Annual East Africa Law Society Conference.
