The COMESA Court of Justice is currently holding a staff retreat from 01 to 03 March 2025 at Siavonga, Zambia, aimed at promoting physical health, mental wellness, work-life balance, and social support among its employees. The retreat provides a platform for staff members to engage in open discussions about workplace well-being while identifying factors that boost motivation and those that contribute to workplace fatigue. Mr. Shame Samuriwo from SOP Consultants is leading the discussions, guiding participants through these critical workplace topics and facilitating meaningful dialogue on improving the work environment.

On the first day of the retreat, participants explored workplace “boosters,” which included a conducive work environment, the economic reward, an open-door policy at the CCJ, the involvement of employees in decision-making, achieving SMART performance contract goals, and contributing to the vision and mission of the Court, among others. These factors were recognized as essential in boosting a conducive and engaging work environment.

Conversely, discussions also centered around “drainers”, that is elements that negatively impact motivation of employees or reduce productivity. Common concerns raised included excessive workloads, lack of clear communication, limited career advancement opportunities, and workplace stressors that impact mental health. Identifying these challenges allowed staff members to propose potential solutions to enhance job satisfaction and performance.

In line with the retreat’s overarching theme the meeting noted that ‘health is wealth,’ emphasising the importance of physical health, mental wellness, work-life balance, and social support among its employees. The retreat underscores CCJ’s commitment to fostering a healthy and productive workforce as the Court aims to enhance employee engagement, motivation, workplace harmony, productivity and overall quality of life.

As the retreat continues, staff members are expected to develop action plans to implement the insights gained, ensuring that the CCJ remains a workplace that values its employees’ well-being and professional growth while enhancing service delivery
